Historical Background

In 1990, the Department of Computer Engineering started-off with other departments in the university as the Department of Computer Science and Engineering that initially awarded degrees to graduating students leading to the following two options: B. Tech. Computer Engineering and   B. Tech. Computer Science. In December 2019, during the 2019/2020 session, the department metamorphosed into the Department of Computer Engineering and the Faculty of Computing and Informatics (where the Department of Computer Science now domiciles with the other two departments).

The Department took off with well-equipped Software and Hardware Laboratories. Presently, the Department has in place a well-equipped Digital Laboratory, Microprocessor Laboratory, Maintenance Laboratory and Simulation Laboratory with adequate software and simulators installed for academic purposes. The administrative building of the department is located amongst the group of five serial buildings allocated to the Faculty of Engineering and Technology. It has four (4) offices that houses the Head of Department, Secretariat staff, data management staff and the examination and result management/processing office. Behind the Departmental office lies the staff block that consists of ten (10) offices for academic staff. The evolutions of the department over the years are also of good note, as she is successfully running the programme and has produced thousands of graduates who are endowed with the necessary and adequate academic requisites and competence in meeting the competing demands of the Nation, primarily information technology and the industrial sector of the economy. Her graduates are well spanned over the globe in a large domain of pragmatic areas. Employers’ ratings have shown that our contributions have been of great impact in the quality of our graduates being produced over the years.

The consistent academic excellence of our products has remained our source of inspiration and hope for the envisioned Information and Communication Technology world. Application of computer systems in virtually all area of life is becoming very famous and interesting. Currently, it drives every other sector of technology globally.  During the coming decades we will see an explosion of these automated systems further infiltrating our lives. Already computing   systems   are   utilized   in   a   variety   of industries, including manufacturing, communication, transport, medicine, service, energy and smart farming.

      We train future educators, researchers and engineers through an intensely personal engagement in a set of research activities that span the development of fundamental knowledge about computational processes, the design of new computing systems and methods, and the creation of novel applications that benefit society at large. The emphasis on interdisciplinary research facilitates engagement with departments across the University and promotes novel use of information technology across a wide range of disciplines.

The Computer Engineering degree programme is jointly taught by virtually all the departments within the faculty. The courses offered by our students span the departments such as Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Computer Science.
